King Louis Philippe, the embattled king of France was known to his subjects as the “bourgeois king,” for his tendency to avoid the pomp and ceremony of previous rulers. He dressed in the clothes of the common man. During his reign, the legitimacy of his throne was constantly in question, after Napoleon decimated the monarchy. The furniture that bears the name of Louis Philippe is similar to that of Louis XV, yet simpler in taste and ornament. The smooth lines common to the earlier Louis are found in abundance. Round bases often replace cabriole legs. Raised paneling is more common. This incredible piece is a beautiful specimen of this style. Made from the most beautiful mahogany you will ever see, this armoire is one of the best we have ever seen. Originally intended for storing arms, armoires are now generally a large, upright, enclosed cupboard with shelves or hooks for hanging garments. Most often seen in a two-door style but also designed with four doors, divided horizontally at armoire center by a pull out shelf. Armoires are built with peg construction in such fashion as can be dismantled and reassembled. This particular piece features a large center mirror, flanked by two beautiful beveled accent mirrors. The simple lines of this piece are echoed in the curve of the mirrors. You will love the beautiful wood grain of the mahogany on the cornice and other accents. This piece would be the perfect closet for your master bedroom. However you decide to employ this piece you are sure to love its undeniable charm.
