King Louis Philippe, the embattled king of France was known to his subjects as the “burgiose king,” for his tendency to avoid the pomp and ceremony of previous rulers. He dressed in the clothes of the common man. During his reign, the legitimacy of his throne was constantly in question, after Napoleon decimated the monarchy. The furniture that bears the name of Louis Philippe is similar to that of Louis XV, yet simpler in taste and ornament. The smooth lines common to the earlier Louis are found in abundance. Round bases replace cabriole legs. The seashell ornament is abandoned. Raised paneling is more common. This charming cabinet features many of the characteristic features of this style. Look at the raised paneling on the cabinet doors; this simple accent is fine and wonderful. This piece is an excellent addition to your décor.
