Antique Louis Xvi Dessert
This charming piece is an excellent example of the style inspired by the sixteenth French monarch to bear the name, Louis. Louis XVI came to the throne in 1774, and reigned for nineteen years, until that fatal year of '93. He was kind, benign, and simple, and had no sympathy with the life of the court during the preceding reign. Marie Antoinette disliked the great pomp of court functions and liked to play at the simple life, so shepherdesses, shepherd's crooks, hats, wreaths of roses, watering pots and many other rustic symbols became the fashion. Nevertheless, the furniture of this period is fine and incredibly beautiful. This lovely piece is a combination of fine hardwood, charming marble and gorgeous brass. The straight lines and ormolu mounts of his time are present in this awesome dessert. Three drawers and three cabinets offer plenty of storage space for anything you could think of. The doors are carved with garlands, as are the dovetailed drawers. The most outstanding feature however is the magnificent marble top. This piece of marble is in wonderful condition.
