These chairs are truly charmers! They are styled in the very old country french manner, with three scalloped ladder backs, including a lovely carved branch on the top arched scallop. The columns on either side are large and beaded. There are four lathe-turned stretchers, two on each side, that attach between the front cabriole legs, and the straight back legs, which give very good support. Notice the front scalloped apron, and the small carving that rests in the center. The front cabriole legs are very substantial with fat knees and slender ankles! The seats are the original hand woven rush. I have always admired the contrast in color between the light golden color of the rush and the deep dark brown of the oak. It is unusual to find chairs in this style, as they are well loved by the French, so they are handed down through the families. Imagine how classy they would look in your dining room, or around your kitchen table. You will admire them more every day you see them--they have a way of growing on you, that's for sure! NOTE: Because of a little metal plaque attached on the inside of the door to the china cabinet in this set, we know where this piece was made: "Fabrique Mecanique de Meubles, MICHEL PIRARD, 416 Rue de Herve 416, Brois de Bruex, Liege." which translates into "manufacturer of furniture, MICHEL PIRARD, street address and town, near Liege, which is just east of Brussels, Belgium.
