This is an absolutely extraordinary piece of furniture hand crafted of solid oak in the late 1880's. It is a whopping 94 inches tall, which means it needs to be in a room with very high ceilings, because it is totally majestic! This is exactly the kind of buffet that you would easily find in the hunting chateaux that dot the French countryside, and were frequented by the royal class especially during the 1700's. They were often called "hunting castles" because they were built specifically to accommodate all the pomp and ceremony that was given to the hunt! We can start the description at the bottom and go upwards. Notice the two front doors, and be overwhelmed at the beauty of the carvings, all hand worked! They are so detailed and almost two and half inches thick! It is a question of acorns, surrounded on both sides by mythical dogs--an integral part of the hunt, for sure! Notice the hand lathe turned columns on either side, truly majestic. Don't miss out on the extra wide molding around the bottom, carved, of course! Now go up to the two drawers above the doors, and be impressed by the carvings there, including the raised carved handles!! Above the bottom unit, you will find what is normally called an "entre deux" which translated from French means "between two." It is a piece that goes between top and bottom and serves as an excellent support. Look at the incredibly massive carved lions that support each side--they are a most impressive sight, truly worthy of a king! Look at the back piece, and you will see a carved crest, interestingly flanked by delicately etched branches and leaves. Now the top piece sits regally with glass shelves and a beautifully carved grid in front of the glass. I can imagine some pretty hefty silver pieces being displayed behind these doors--nothing is too good for royalty!! The doors are flanked by lathe-turned columns matching the columns on the bottom piece. Now notice the carved pheasants on either side of a large beehive, that protrudes from the center almost three inches! The crowning top is a crest of the family arms. There aren't enough words to adequately describe the splendor of this piece, but we can say that it is a definite museum piece, in fabulous condition, and ready to be your family treasure, adored in your own "castle" just increasing in value every year, while you enjoy and enjoy! m23oc1098
