King Louis Philippe, the embattled king of France was known to his subjects as the “bourgeois king,” for his tendency to avoid the pomp and ceremony of previous rulers. He dressed in the clothes of the common man. During his reign, the legitimacy of his throne was constantly in question, after Napoleon decimated the monarchy. The furniture that bears the name of Louis Philippe is similar to that of Louis XV, yet simpler in taste and ornament. The smooth lines common to the earlier Louis are found in abundance. Round bases replace cabriole legs. The seashell ornament is abandoned. Raised paneling is more common. This incredible armoire is an excellent example of this style.
