Exquisite Antique Breton’s Style Armoire
This is a most exquisite piece of furniture, made around 1870 in the area of France called Brittany, which is the western coast where shipping was the main industry, and you see this influence with the carving of the ship’s helm almost always found somewhere on the piece. In this instance you see the ship’s helm on the top piece, flanked by two local musicians , one with flute and one with a bag pipe, with the beautiful tall oak trees from the area rising majestic in the background. Just beneath the large cornice you find a lovely carving of a local maiden with the folk dress of the era, featuring the wide brimmed hat. The two front doors feature full length arched beveled mirrors, trimmed in a beautifully carved molding. There are two full length lathe-turned columns on either side, and at the bottom you find a long carved dove-tailed drawer for extra storage. Notice the panel construction on the two sides, and even the back--this is a fabulous quality piece, meticulously hand crafted in such detail that will actually increase in value every year because it is built to last forever! Now open the two doors and find the four long shelves and extra drawer--wonderful storage for books or linens or anything else in the house--what a treasure this piece is! I also have to mention the fact that furniture that comes from this area in France is highly sought after by Europeans and is very difficult to acquire. The dealer that I work with in Belgium has a crew of men going through France in search of just such pieces, and when he finds one he lets me know immediately. Perhaps in a whole year I can find three or four sets of furniture in this style, and that is all! We have put a reserve on this piece for that reason. Whoever wins this furniture will have gained a fabulous piece of furniture that will be appreciated and loved for generations to come!
