The Renaissance was not only a period of incredible artistic and scientific achievement; it was also a period of religious rebirth. Some of the most famous works of this period such as, Leonardo’s “Last Supper,” Michelangelo’s “David,” and the “Pieta,” were influenced by classical Christian stories. Brunelleschi’s Duomo, (the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) was a masterpiece of architecture. The Church gained much beauty and splendor during this period. Cathedrals dotted the land; abbeys and parishes were common. Furniture was made for these holy places, was some of the most exquisite ever seen. This wonderful deacons bench is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship dedicated to the Church. Made from European hardwood, this piece is covered in awesome carvings. An urn is carved in the center of the main expanses of the back and base, surrounded by flowing plantlike forms. Intricate accent carving frames each individual piece for a divine effect. Cup and saucer pillars support the armrests, which have scrolled ends. A large cupboard under the seat provides plenty of storage space and was traditionally used for storage of items a priest might use during mass. This piece is gorgeous! Wherever it is placed, it would make a heavenly statement in your home! R05OC633
