This is a fabulous scene that looks like it came straight out of Lithuania, where I have often visited with my husband when he worked for Nato and was in charge of negotiations with the Eastern European countries and I had the privilege of accompanying him on some of his trips. This scene could have been lifted straight out of any one of many villages and towns throughout these countries, including the cobblestone road, (or dirt) and the big timber barn that opens right up onto the street. Look at the farmer who is walking around the corner with his pitch fork over his shoulder. It is definitely spring time, with cherry trees in blossom. The nostalgia is incredible, and with it comes a calm and peace that can only be felt deep in the countryside in countries that are far behind in the times--lucky them! I believe that the painting was done around the 1940's in between the wars and the frame is of the same vintage--carved pine. What a wonderful scene to add to a great art collection, or to simply add old world grace and charm to any room in your home. A real work of art is timeless and will always be a great value.
