Seventeen Vintage French Porcelain Dinner Plates

My husband and I go to Belgium twice a year to buy the furniture that we sell on, and we spend about five or six weeks each time we go. We visit many flea markets and dealers, and s and thrift stores. One bright Saturday morning we walked in to a consignment shop in Charleroi, which is south of Brussels, and displayed on the front table was this set of china. It was love at first sight! I have seen all styles of china for years and years, and never have I come upon a pattern more wonderfully French than this one. The signature on the back of the set simply says “France” and “porcelain” so I do not know where it was made, but I know there are several renown manufacturers in France, including Sevres, and Limoge, but I am sorry to say that I don’t know the town that it comes from. Here we are offering the seventeen plates that came with the set with a delicately scalloped edge, trimmed in gold, and featuring an elaborate flower trim. There are four different scenes in the set, each of them signed by the original painter--Watteau. They are all scenes of the “belle epoque” which means the beautiful era, in French. It was a time in the 1700’s where the aristocracy lived the beautiful life, dressing in beautiful clothes, living in beautiful chateaus, and spending their time in manicured gardens, eating pastries, and listening to classical music. Many of the scenes depict some amorous affair going on, in style and class! You can imagine how impressive it would be to offer your best dinner on these wonderful plates--or better still, get the whole set! It is an acquisition you can be proud of, for sure!
